Best Churches and Temples in Goa
Goa is enriched with Churches proclaiming the glory of Portuguese architecture and ancient Goan style as well as renowned temples of spectacular design. In India, from no other place one could see such a tribute to heritage and religious beliefs. The Se Cathedral in Old Goa is the largest church in Asia, a 16th century monument with the biggest golden bell in the world. It has 14 side chapels and in the last chapel one can see a cross and according to tradition, upon which a vision of Christ appeared in 1919. The Church of St. Francis Assisi in old Goa is near to the Se Cathedral, constructed in the original Manueline style. Its interior is decorated with wonderful wood carvings and attractive paintings. The convent at its back now houses the Archaeological museum. Bom Jesus Basilica is another church in Old Goa which attracts lots of tourists every day. The mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier are entombed in this church. The church of the Our Lady of the Mount and St. Augustine tower as well as Santa Monica cloister is the other Christian religious places of historical importance in Goa, all are capable to take you to another era and fill you with a feeling of awe and reverence. Shri Mangueshi temple, dedicated to Lord Siva is a small temple but with a spectacular elegance. The supercilious white tower at the entrance of this temple acts as a landmark of the backdrop. Shri Bhagavati temple is an old temple with 500 years of heritage. Two life sized images of elephants carved from black stone will welcome you at the entrance. The statue of the Goddess Bhagavati Ashabhuja is quite imposing. All of these places offer a tribute to history filled with religious beliefs and the drive in people to build outstanding places of worship in the best of possible at that time and now we could see and marvel at them. All are such a visual banquet one will never tire of while looking at them.
